Banana Date Smoothie

A velvety, naturally sweet smoothie drawing on the ancient nourishing tradition of dates — a fruit revered across the Middle East and Mediterranean for centuries. Ripe banana adds creamy body and a gentle potassium boost, while unsweetened almond milk keeps it light yet satisfying. This energy-dense blend requires absolutely no added sugar, making it a smart, wholesome choice for sustained vitality.

How to Make It

  1. 1

    Prepare the Dates

If your Medjool dates are firm or dry, place them in a small bowl and cover with warm water. Soak for 10 minutes, then drain and remove pits. This softens them for smooth blending and ensures no chunky bits remain in the final smoothie.

Tip: Medjool dates are preferred for their caramel-like flavour and natural moisture, but Deglet Noor dates work well too — just soak them a little longer.
  2. 2

    Prepare the Banana

Peel the banana and break it into 3–4 chunks. For the creamiest result, use a banana that has been peeled, sliced, and frozen overnight. Frozen banana eliminates the need for excess ice and gives the smoothie a thick, milkshake-like consistency.

Tip: The riper the banana (with brown spots), the sweeter and more digestible it is — and the lower the resistant starch content, making it gentler on the gut.
  3. 3

    Add Ingredients to Blender

Pour the unsweetened almond milk into the blender first — this protects the blender blade and ensures smoother blending. Add the banana chunks, soaked dates, Greek yogurt (if using), chia seeds, ground cinnamon, and vanilla extract. Add ice cubes only if your banana was not frozen.

Tip: Adding liquid first is a key blending technique that prevents the motor from straining and produces a smoother, more uniform texture.
  4. 4

    Blend Until Smooth

Secure the blender lid and blend on high speed for 45–60 seconds until completely smooth. Pause and scrape down the sides if needed. The smoothie should be thick, creamy, and free of date or chia seed chunks. If too thick, add an additional splash of almond milk — 1 tablespoon at a time.

Tip: Do not over-blend once smooth, as this can introduce too much air and alter the texture. A brief, powerful blend is ideal.
  5. 5

    Taste and Adjust

Taste the smoothie before serving. If you prefer a stronger cinnamon note, add a pinch more. For a richer flavour, a small pinch of sea salt can subtly enhance the natural sweetness of the dates and banana without adding meaningful sodium.

Tip: This smoothie is intentionally unsweetened — resist the urge to add honey or syrup. The Medjool dates provide more than enough natural sweetness alongside important minerals like magnesium and potassium.
  6. 6

    Serve Immediately

Pour into a tall glass and serve immediately for the best flavour and texture. Optionally, garnish with a light dusting of cinnamon, a few chia seeds on top, or a thin banana slice on the rim of the glass. If meal-prepping, store in a sealed jar in the refrigerator for up to 12 hours — shake or stir well before drinking.

Tip: Chia seeds will continue to absorb liquid over time. If storing, the smoothie will thicken considerably — thin with a little extra almond milk before serving.
